Catering to the booming market for UHVDC applications both in China and abroad, we developed an A5000 type UHVDC converter valve technology. It is rated at ±800kV/4500A, while downwardly compatible with lower voltage applications. The A5000 type valve has passed all the type tests conforming to IEC60700 standard, accredited by DNV KEMA. The A5000 valve has been successfully applied in Jinping-Sunan project, Southern Hami-Zhengzhou project and Xiluodu-Zhejiang project.

With the rapid development of China’ s economy, significant coal-fired generation capacity is planned in the northwestern China; the distance from generation sources to load centers along the coast in eastern China could be more than 3000km. From a technical-economical point of view, when the distance exceeds 2500km, 1100kV UHVDC offers the best solution.
On the other hand, utilities are expecting more customer value from technological progress. More power per line is required at the existing voltage level, which means an increase on the current rating (i.e., 6250A).
C-EPRI takes the lead in pushing forward the UHVDC technology even further, and has made tremendous breakthrough in both directions. The 1100kV UHVDC prototype valve and the 6250A prototype valve came out subsequently in 2012 and 2014, both passing complete type tests and ready for project application.
