C-EPRI self-developed ±320kV/1000MW HVDC Flexible valve and valve base controller passed type tests witnessed by DNV KEMA

Beijing, China, Jan.17, 2013—The HVDC Flexible valve and valve base controller (VBC) developed by C-EPRI Electric Power Engineering Co., Ltd (C-EPRI) with the highest voltage and capacity rating achieved an unprecedented success by passing all the type tests specified in IEC62501 under witness of DNV KEMA. The valve and VBC are developed for ±320kV/1000MW VSC-HVDC Dalian City In-feed Project which transmits electricity from the north part to the south part of the city.

The valve tower and VBC survived after a test period of 2 months during when 18 test items in total are accomplished, including insulation test between valve terminals, overload test, and fault current test. For the first time in the world, the a.c.-d.c. voltage test between valve terminals is carried out. In addition, during current test valve peak current reached 1800A, the highest rating of its kind.

C-EPRI is mainly involved in the research, manufacturing and engineering of HVDC Classic (LCC-HVDC) and HVDC Flexible (VSC-HVDC). The HVDC Flexible technology using voltage sourced converter offers an effective solution for renewable energy integration, supply for offshore loads, in-feed to city centres as well as multi-terminal interconnection.
