Beijing, China, May 4, 2016 - GEIRI’s Power System Power Electronics Laboratory successfully completed the dielectric type test of the converter valve for ±800 kV Belo Monte Hydropower UHVDC transmission project on May 3, 2016. The converter valves are manufactured by Siemens. This is GEIRI’s first valve test order from overseas client.
The entire dielectric test package covers three major categories and 20+ test items, including UHVDC valve support test, multiple valve unit (MVU) test and test between valve terminals. The test parameters differ greatly from those of GEIRI’s past references. To make sure the test is completed on schedule, a comprehensive and well thought-out test plan is prepared beforehand, involving detailed simulation and calculations as well as test waveform adjustment. All these work has laid a solid foundation for the success of the test.
The Belo Monte Hydropower project is a
power export project for the Belo Monte Hydropower Station, Brazil’s second
largest hydropower station. It is also the first ±800kV UHVDC infrastructure
across the America. This UHVDC power highway is designed to transfer up to
4000MW hydropower from Brazil’s clean power base in the northwest to its load
centers in the southeast. The project is expected to be commissioned at the end
of 2017.
